- The Dudley town birth register for births 1894 include one entry on page 12, no. 69, 23 August. The entry was originally written Thomas H. Sanders, then the Thomas was crossed out and William H. was written above it. The record is the birth of a male child of Daniel and Julia (Farrell) Sanders. William H. Sanders or Saunders does not appear in the Massachusetts Vital Records, 1841-1910 for the town of Dudley for this date of birth, however, one Thomas H. Sanders [sic] does appear with the same birth date and place and same parents [see MVR Dudley births, 1894, vol. 441: 420, no. 69.] The MVR listing was recorded 24 January 1895, several months after the birth in August. Thomas H. Saunders or Sanders only appears that once in the MVR and never again appears with this family, and no death record has been discovered for him. On the other hand, William Henry Saunders does consistently appear with this family. Further, in the 1900 U.S. census, Julia A. Saunders is reported to be the mother of 9, eight living, which would support the existence of Thomas H., but in 1910 it is reported she is the mother of 8, seven living, which is more consistent with Thomas having not been born. Since the informant for these censuses is not named, it is unknown which record is correct, but it is possible she was not the informant in 1900, but was in 1910. Given these factors and until new information surfaces, it is surmised that there is only one child born 23 August 1894 to Daniel and Julia (Farrell) Sanders/Saunders, that the name in the local copy was changed, but missed getting changed in the state record.
